Shipping Biological Specimens

Shipping biological specimens can mean the contents are truly one of a kind. Consider the global population and then think of sending a biopsy or a tissue sample from any one person to anywhere in the world. There is no more important application for cold chain packaging.

When the stakes are high you want experience on your team, EFP and our cold chain partners combine to provide the support you need. The EFP strategic alliance was assembled to serve the life sciences industries. Our custom solutions protect your biological specimens during transit around the corner or around the world.

Biological Material Categories * :

  • Infectious Substances: Substances which are known or are reasonably expected to contain micro-organisms or other agents, which can cause disease in humans or animals. Infectious substances are separated into categories:

Category A: The highest risk category of microorganisms or materials that may cause permanent disability, life threatening or fatal disease to humans or animals when exposure to them occurs.
Category B: Low and moderate risk microorganisms or materials not in a form generally capable of causing permanent disability or life-threatening or fatal disease in otherwise healthy humans or animals when exposure occurs.

  • Diagnostic Specimens: Any human or animal material including transported for diagnostic or investigational purposes, excluding live infected animals.
  • Biological Products: Non-infectious substances. Examples include plant materials, fixed tissues and DNA.
  • Genetically Modified Organisms: Those materials that are capable of modifying plants, animals, or microbiological substances in a way not resulting from natural reproduction.
  • Unregulated Biological Materials: Substances that are not considered hazardous or infectious IATA or DOT shipping regulations.

Complete packaging systems require more than just the thermal packaging system. Special labels (UN, IATA), regulated packaging instructions, and visible warnings are necessary. For help in making the right choices for your sensitive materials, call EFP. We know the ropes, the rules, and provide molded and fabricated insulated containers to companies who specialize in these critical packaging systems.
